Four Ways to Stay Safe: #2 Protect Your Head

Protect Yourself

Even a simple fall can cause a life threatening head injury. The brain is fragile and often does not heal the way that broken bones can. The damage can stay with you for life. Helmets provide protection. By law, bicycle riders under 18 years of age must wear a bicycle helmet while riding on a public road (VC §21212). Wear your helmet correctly!

As an additional legal matter, if you are hit by a negligent driver while you are riding your bike, but you were not wearing a helmet, the insurance company will often try to use that fact against you by saying that you were negligent in not wearing a helmet, and that any head injuries you suffer are your own fault.  Another good reason to wear a helmet (as if another good reason was needed)!
