Bay Area Bicycle Law is the only Northern California-based firm to specialize exclusively in representing cyclists.
Bay Area Bicycle Law’s Founder and Chief Legal Counsel, Michael Stephenson, started the firm after moving to San Francisco in 2010. With a passion for cycling and for representing those most vulnerable on the roads of the San Francisco Bay Area, Mr. Stephenson realized that many cyclists were being represented by general practitioners with relatively little experience working on bicycle collision cases. Some of these attorneys failed to appreciate the nuances of how traffic laws apply to bicycles, or how insurance coverage can most effectively be used to help cyclists injured in a bicycle accident.
By specializing in bike crash cases, our attorneys have seen and heard it all when it comes to bike accidents. We are very familiar with the tactics insurance companies use to deny bicycle crash claims, and understand how the California Vehicle Code affects your case. We regularly handle cases with adverse police reports, and know that police officers are often not trained in assessing fault after a bicycle vs. motor vehicle crash. We are also familiar with the injuries commonly caused by bike crashes, which means we can accurately evaluate the value of bicyclists claims.
Additionally, none of our cases are passed onto a paralegal—which is the routine practice at many personal injury firms. By having an attorney handle your claim from day one, we ensure that no fact, argument, defense, or legal theory is overlooked.
Outside of the courtroom, our attorneys regularly participate in bike coalition-sponsored events, teaching community members about bicycle laws and safety. By speaking with members of the community, we learn about the unique challenges cyclists face on the roadways and how to best situate our work to fit the community’s needs.
