Stockton Cyclist Killed In Tragic Car Accident

On March 19th, 2018, a car crash on the streets of Stockton resulted in the death of one cyclist. Stockton police officers are deeply concerned about the rise in cyclist deaths over the past month. Local safety officials say this is the fifth cyclist fatality within a month.

According to Fox 40, this crash happened on Tam O’Shanter Drive at 7AM. News reports say the woman who was struck was riding her bike down the street with one other cyclist.

As of today, police aren’t sure what caused this fatal crash. Officials did say, however, that they don’t believe alcohol or drugs were involved.

After the crash, rescue crews rushed the injured woman to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. News reports say she was only 23 and had one child.

Was Texting To Blame?

While officers haven’t released an official cause for this fatality, they stressed the importance of basic safety habits to all car drivers. Police remind all motorists to give cyclists on the road the same courtesy they would a fellow driver. Some of the key safety strategies officers highlighted included slowing down and never texting while driving.

Stockton’s police force also set up a special task force in the wake of these five cyclist fatalities. They hope this new squad will encourage all motorists to take safety seriously, especially near cyclists.

Wrongful Death

While we’re not sure what happened in the case above, relatives of any cyclist who is killed in Stockton or anywhere in California should know about wrongful death lawsuits. Wrongful death lawsuits are often brought when the carelessness and negligence of somebody else causes the death of a person. The survivors and the personal representative of the decedent’s estate are allowed to bring a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for damages suffered as a result of the untimely death of the decedent.

Damages might include but aren’t limited to the following:

  • Medical bills before death
  • Loss of income that would have been provided to survivors
  • Psychological pain and suffering of the survivors from the loss
  • Loss of companionship, guidance and consortium
  • Funeral and burial costs
