Semi-Trucks and Bicycle Accidents in Bay Area

Large commercial trucks such as a semi-trailer can weigh as much as 80,000 lbs fully loaded, while the average cyclist and bike weigh just under 200 lbs. When the two collide, it usually doesn’t go well for the cyclist.

The Bay Atea is a mecca for cyclists with many of the municipalities developing long-term programs for increasing cycling awareness and infrastructure. The region also has some of the most robust economies in the state, and this puts large commercial trucks on the streets with bicycles.

Cyclist Hit by Semi-Truck Near Cotati

A man riding his bike along Highway 116 northwest of Cotati when he was hit by a semi-truck. The crash happened around 8 p.m. just west of Stony Point Road on Wednesday, February 5, 2020. According to the California Highway Patrol, the truck driver said he didn’t see the cyclist and that the bike has a flashing red light attached as required by law.

The driver was cooperative with police, and no charges have been filed as of yet. CHP says the accident is still under investigation.

Semi-Trucks and Bicycles

A semi-truck poses many problems for a cyclist. It’s size not only increases the risk of serious injury, it also makes it more difficult for the driver to see the cyclist. Trucks have large blinds spots called “no zones” where the driver is unable to see a cyclist even though it’s right next to the truck.

When a truck turns, it also creates a risk for any cyclists nearby. Trucks sometimes have to turn wide to get their back tires around the corner, and when they move in the opposite direction of the turn, a cyclist sometimes moves up to take the newly open space. Then the truck turns and hits the cyclist.

Semi-Truck Bicycle Injuries

A small bump from a semi-truck can send a cyclist sprawling off their bike. This creates a double impact for the cyclist which can cause serious injuries. Some of the more common are:

  • Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • Severe Concussions
  • Wrist Fractures
  • Elbow Fractures
  • Broken Arms/Legs
  • Chest Compressions
  • Internal Injuries/Bleeding
  • Severe Road Rash

If you’ve been injured by a large commercial truck, you should talk to an attorney about your rights under the law. Don’t speak to anyone from the insurance company or their lawyers until you know the law.
