San Jose Mayor Involved in Bicycle Crash on January 1, 2019
An SUV struck San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo as he was bicycling on Salt Lake Drive near the east foothills. Liccardo, who is an avid cyclist and considered “the most bicycle-friendly politician,” suffered bone fractures and contusions in the incident.
The Mercury News reports that after the crash, the mayor’s spokesperson said the Mayor was “a bit banged up but nothing serious.” However, a close friend of Mayor Liccardo, who himself was seriously injured in a bicycle accident, said the mayor had a broken collar and chest bone and suffered back and neck injuries.
The Accident happened 12:30 Tuesday, January 1, 2019, when a black SUV turned right striking the mayor knocking him off his bike.
Cycling has been increasing in popularity over the past decade in San Jose. Even with big improvements under way in the city, motorists and their vehicles are the number one threat to cyclists.
