Four Bicyclists Injured in Marin County – Hit and Run Driver Arrested
— SFGate (@SFGate) October 8, 2017
On Saturday, October 7, 2017, a man in a blue Dodge Ram pickup truck hit 4 bicyclists participating in an event called The Jensie Gran Fondo of Marin. This event benefits the Marin County Bicycle Coalition.
The Marin County Bicycle Coalition is one of the local bicycle coalitions that we support. Even if you don’t bike, if you’re a parent, you’ve likely heard of the Safe Routes to Schools Program. This nationwide program was pioneered right in Marin County. MCBC has also introduced bike paths all over Marin County and works hard to create safe roads for cyclists.
If today is the first time you’ve heard of a bicycle coalition, we’d encourage you to read about all of the great things they contribute here: Why we love bicycle coalitions.
Police have arrested the suspect
According to Mercury News, one cyclist was airlifted to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and three were transported to Marin General.
Witnesses told local news reporters that the driver of the truck appeared to have intentionally swerved out of his way to run over the 4 cyclists on Point Reyes-Petaluma Road. After the collision, the driver fled the scene. Thankfully, a motorcyclist with a GoPro on his helmet was able to provide detailed pictures and video of the suspect.
According to SFGate, the 21yr old suspect from Novato was arrested just before midnight, ending a 12hr search for the hit and run driver. The driver of the truck is currently in the Marin County Jail on a felony charge of hit-and-run causing injury.
Do I need a lawyer after a crash?
Even if someone acted intentionally and is prosecuted for a terrible act of violence, injured victims will still need to be compensated for their injuries. Drivers may be held accountable if they acted intentionally or even if they were negligent and looking at their phone instead of driving.
