Cyclist killed in Big Rig Crash in West Oakland
On Tuesday, January 30, 2018, a cyclist riding along Market Street in West Oakland was involved in an accident with a big-rig truck. The cyclist and the big-rig were both traveling north on Market. According to News Locker, when the big rig began turning east onto Fifth Street it struck the cyclist. The 23 year old cyclist died at a nearby hospital.
Right hand turn bicycle accidents
Market Street has a bicycle lane. When a vehicle is going to make a right hand turn, they should merge into the bicycle lane before making that turn. It is not clear what exactly happened in this accident from the news report. Did the truck merge? Was the truck’s turn signal on? Was Market and Fifth’s bicycle lane blocked?
After any accident involving a serious injury or a death, accident victims will need to prove fault to be compensated.
