Cyclist Killed In North Sacramento Hit-And-Run

A car crash in Sacramento claimed the life of one cyclist on July 21, 2018. Although the driver initially fled the crime scene, police officers were able to catch up with him a few hours after the crash.

According to The Sacramento Bee, this crash occurred at 2AM on Highway 160-N near Northgate Boulevard. Allegedly, the driver of a Honda Accord fatally struck a cyclist and then drove away.

When first-responders arrived on the scene, they soon pronounced the cyclist dead from his injuries. Thankfully, police officers were, however, able to track down the driver involved in this crash and take him into custody later that day. The driver who fled the scene was booked for suspicion of felony hit-and-run and DUI.

What is Wrongful Death?

Anyone who has experienced the nightmare of losing a loved one to someone’s reckless actions should be aware of “wrongful death”. Wrongful death actions are sometimes brought by family members after a fatal bicycle accident. Hopefully no reader ever needs this information, but if you do you can read more about wrongful death after a bicycle accident.

Cyclist Fatalities: A Big Issue For Big Cities

Unfortunately for us cyclists, most cities were designed with the automobile in mind. Although many cities are working towards creating more bike-friendly infrastructure, most of the fatal cyclist crashes continue to take place in urban areas. Recent research has shown that over 70 percent of cyclist fatalities in America happen in cities.

Thankfully, many cities in California are now working with the Swedish-based Vision Zero initiative to help reduce traffic fatalities. Vision Zero analysts work with local law enforcement to determine the best safety solutions for different cities around the world. You can keep track of the Los Angeles and San Francisco Vision Zero programs online.
