Bicycle Repair in San Francisco an Essential Service during COVID-19

San Francisco cyclists don’t have to worry about busting a tire during the COVID-19 Stay at Home Order. On March 19th, Mayor London Breed officially announced the city’s bicycle repair shops will be allowed to remain open.

On March 18th, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition (SFBC) sent out tweets asking city officials whether bike repair shops would be considered an essential service. In addition to the response from Mayor Breed, District 3 Supervisor Aaron Peskin quickly re-tweeted SFBC saying bike repair shops will be regarded as “essential” and will “continue during the #COVID19 emergency.”

To help slow the spread of the coronavirus, SFBC is encouraging all cyclist repair shops to follow CDC guidelines in terms of proper hygiene. In addition to proper cleaning techniques, the CDC encourages everyone to maintain at least six feet of distance to reduce the chances of infection.

Many of our first responders, medical professionals and others providing essential services to the Bay Area use a bicycle as their primary source of transportation. So just as auto repair facilities will remain open, so will bicycle repair shops. And of course, cycling is still a great way to get exercise, even during Shelter in Place or “Stay at Home” Orders.

Although all bicycle repair shops can remain open during the COVID-19 shutdown, nearly every store has different policies. Some businesses will have reduced hours while others might service bikes on an appointment-only basis.
