Bicycle Accidents in San Joaquin County

A cyclist is usually the most vulnerable person on the street anytime they ride. What seems like a small impact in a car, truck or SUV can be devastating for someone on a bicycle. Collisions can cause severe injuries and even result in a tragic death.

Distracted drivers are common hazards for cyclists in San Joaquin County. When they cause accidents, drivers often don’t admit they weren’t paying attention to the road and didn’t check properly for any bicyclists who may have been traveling next to them.  A careless move can create a dangerous situation for an unprotected cyclist out for a ride.

Man on Bicycle Killed in San Joaquin County Accident

A bicyclist lost his life after a collision with a vehicle in Tracy on Saturday. CBS13-TV reported the accident happened along Mac Arthur Drive and East Lake Drive on September 19, 2020.

The Tracy Police Department responded to the accident around 7 p.m. and found the rider on the side of the road. The 45-year-old victim was taken to the San Joaquin County Hospital where he later died.

Investigators have not released the cause of the accident. They say the driver involved in the crash stayed on the scene and was cooperating with officers.

The Next Step for Families After a Tragic Bicycle Accident

San Joaquin County can be a surprisingly dangerous place for cyclists. California Healthline tracked deadly bicycle accidents in all California counties. Over a three-year period, San Joaquin County saw 26 fatal accidents, placing it among the top five counties in the state for deadly bicycle collisions.

These instances are more than numbers. They are tragedies for local communities that need to work harder to offer riders a safe path.

A family will be devastated by the news of a loved one lost in a cycling accident. And the tragic circumstances will only continue as hospital bills and funeral costs begin to arrive. The family left behind should not have to face these emotional and financial burdens alone.

If a careless driver caused an accident that took a life, close family members are permitted to file a wrongful death claim to get help with some of these hardships. The civil lawsuit would be filed against the driver’s insurance company in the hopes of recovering money to help pay for damages like medical costs built up before the victim passed away.

Funeral costs can also be reimbursed. A family should also be able to receive compensation for the financial support the deceased victim would have provided the family through work if he or she had survived. Even the emotional support a loved one would provide to a spouse and children over a lifetime can be compensated in a settlement or trial verdict.

A close relative like a spouse or domestic partner or the children of the victim can file a wrongful death claim on behalf of the family. An attorney can also file this claim for the family and assist in building a strong case against the at-fault driver’s insurance company.
