Antioch Deadly Bicycle Accidents

A bicyclist traveling during morning or evening rush hour can face more risk of accidents from heavier traffic and more distracted drivers at the wheel. A careless driver can forget to check mirrors and blind spots before a move and suddenly present a giant and dangerous obstacle to a bicyclist traveling nearby.

The dangers are documented in accident numbers every year. The California Department of Health found that over a seven-year span, Contra Costa County actually ranked in the top ten of state counties for bicycle fatality rates. Adjusting for population size, Contra Costa County was a more dangerous place for cyclists than both Los Angeles County and San Diego County.

Antioch Deadly Bicycle Accident

A woman was struck and killed while riding her bicycle in Antioch Monday morning. CBSN-TV reported the accident occurred around 8:20 a.m. on James Donlon Boulevard near G Street on October 12, 2020.

Police say they found the 57-year-old victim unresponsive with a major head injury. She passed away from her injuries later that day at the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle involved stayed on the scene to cooperate with investigators. They do not believe drug or alcohol use was a factor in the accident.

Support for Families After a Fatal Bicycle Accident

A distracted driver can fail to make a proper check of nearby lanes and make a mistake that brings a tragic end to a bicycle ride. The families of victims should be allowed time to mourn the loss of a loved one after such a devastating accident.

Unfortunately, victims may leave behind hospital bills and funeral costs after a collision that wasn’t their fault. The family left behind may face enormous costs and find that they are suddenly without the financial support the deceased victim would have provided had they been able to keep working.

In these cases, a family should not bear the burden of a driver’s mistake. Family members of the deceased cyclist can file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver and his or her insurance company. This would be a civil lawsuit that would hope to secure the family’s future by winning compensation for medical costs and funeral bills. A successful claim could also earn money to compensate for a spouse and children’s loss of the emotional support the victim would have provided over the years to come.
